A specialist reputation, risk and crisis advisory firm is looking for an experienced marketing leader to join on a fractional basis, initially around two days a week, to build the next stage of its commercial growth.
About the business
This firm advises organisations facing complex reputational challenges across sectors including healthcare, education, insurance, legal services, charities and the public sector.
The business has grown organically through referrals and long-term relationships and now has an annual turnover of approximately £1.4 million. It has a strong reputation in its markets and a clear business strategy for its next phase of growth, but marketing capability has not kept pace with the rest of the business.
The opportunity
This is not a lead generation role, and it is not about simply managing marketing activity. The business strategy is already established. What is needed is an experienced marketing leader who can translate that strategy into a coherent commercial marketing function.
The business currently lacks many of the marketing fundamentals that a growing firm like this should have. The right person will be able to think strategically and also roll up their sleeves to build capability from the ground up.
What you will be doing
- Reviewing and challenging the existing marketing approach and business positioning
- Developing a practical 12 to 24 month marketing strategy aligned to the wider business plan
- Clarifying market positioning, messaging and value proposition across core sectors
- Developing a clear go to market strategy for products and advisory programmes
- Reviewing the website, collateral, thought leadership and content strategy
- Recommending the most effective mix of referrals, partnerships, events, digital marketing and account based marketing
- Building marketing KPIs, planning processes and reporting
- Managing and coordinating external agencies where appropriate
- Coaching and developing the existing marketing and business development resource, rather than replacing it
- Helping determine what longer term commercial capability the business will need, including whether and when additional sales or marketing roles should be introduced
About you
You will have held a senior marketing leadership role within a professional services, consultancy, advisory or knowledge based business. This might have been as a:
- Chief Marketing Officer
- Marketing Director
- Chief Growth Officer
- Experienced Fractional CMO
You are likely to have come from a firm such as:
- A law firm or other regulated professional services practice
- An insurance, risk or specialist underwriting business
- A PR, communications or reputation management agency
- A management, strategy or business advisory consultancy
- An accountancy or financial advisory practice
- Another knowledge based or expertise led business of a similar size
Experience of founder-led businesses and scaling organisations from around £1m to £5m plus turnover would be particularly valuable.
Consumer marketing experience alone is unlikely to be sufficient. You should understand how professional services firms win work through reputation, expertise, relationships and thought leadership.
Above all, you will be commercially minded, enjoy working alongside founders, and be pragmatic rather than theoretical. You should be equally comfortable operating at strategic and operational levels.
The engagement
This is envisaged as an initial fractional engagement of two days a week, with flexibility depending on the individual and the needs of the business. The assignment is likely to begin with a strategic review, followed by hands-on implementation and ongoing support.
The objective is not simply to improve marketing activity, but to build a sustainable marketing capability that supports the next phase of the business's growth.
