Sponsor Spotlight : Vin Kaur, PRCA Head of Engagement

Posted in Interview,

As part of our Independent Consultant of the Year Awards 2026, we're delighted to have the PRCA as a sponsor, donating one year's freelance membership to our winner. Madeleine Weightman, Co-Founder of The Work Crowd, sat down with Vin Kaur, PRCA Head of Engagement, to find out more about her work, her thinking and what the membership involves.

As Chair of the PRCA Independent Consultants Group, I see first-hand the growth of the freelance community. From your perspective, how is the independent workforce shaping the future of the communications industry?

From where we sit at the PRCA, we’re seeing a clear and sustained shift: independent consultants are no longer operating at the margins, they’re central to how the communications industry functions. The freelance workforce brings agility, specialist expertise, and a results-driven mindset that clients increasingly value. Businesses are building more flexible models, often blending in-house teams with independent talent, and that’s reshaping how campaigns are delivered.

What does PRCA membership offer independent consultants that they might not be able to access on their own?

PRCA membership gives independent consultants access to a level of structure, support and credibility that can be difficult to build alone. That includes industry-recognised standards, insights, and best practice guidance, as well as access to resources like contract templates and benchmarking data. Perhaps more importantly, it offers visibility, being part of a respected professional body signals quality and commitment to clients in a way that’s hard to replicate independently.

With the pace of change in communications, how does the PRCA support freelancers in continuing to develop their skills and stay ahead of the industry?

The pace of change in communications is relentless, so continuous learning is essential. The PRCA supports freelancers through training programmes, webinars, and events that cover everything from emerging digital trends to leadership and business skills. Members also benefit from thought leadership, research and industry insights that help them anticipate change rather than react to it.

One of the challenges for independents can be feeling isolated. How does the PRCA create opportunities for connection and collaboration within its network?

Isolation is a real challenge for many independents, and it’s something the PRCA actively addresses. Through groups like the Independent Consultants Group, as well as events, forums, and networking opportunities, we create spaces for members to connect, share experiences, and collaborate. These aren’t just social connections, they often lead to partnerships, referrals and new business opportunities, which can be invaluable for freelancers.

How important is it for independent consultants to demonstrate credibility and professionalism, and what role does PRCA membership play in reinforcing that?

Credibility is fundamental for independent consultants. Without the backing of an agency, your reputation is your currency. PRCA membership reinforces that by aligning individuals with a recognised code of conduct and professional standards. It shows clients that you’re committed to ethical practice, transparency, and excellence, factors that can make a real difference when competing for work.

The winner of our Freelancer of the Year Award will receive a year’s PRCA membership. What will that give them access to, and how can it support their career over the next 12 months?

A year’s PRCA membership gives the Freelancer of the Year winner access to a very practical set of tools and opportunities they can use straight away. This includes entry to PRCA training courses and webinars to build both technical and business skills, as well as access to industry research, insights and best practice guides to inform their work.

They’ll also be able to attend member-only events, which are key for building relationships, generating referrals and finding collaboration opportunities. On a day-to-day level, they can draw on PRCA resources such as legal guidance, contract templates, and industry benchmarking, helping them run their business more confidently and professionally.

In addition, being listed as a PRCA member enhances their visibility and credibility with potential clients, while the association with the Freelancer of the Year Award further strengthens their personal brand. Over 12 months, that combination of learning, support, profile-raising, and network access can translate directly into new business opportunities and long-term career growth.

Whether you need interim, fractional or freelance expertise for a project, to plug a gap or upskill your team, or you are exploring new opportunities as an independent consultant, The Work Crowd can help you connect.
